UTC@harbourside, Newhaven
Overview
ECE Planning are enormously pleased to announce that planning consent has been secured for the development of the multi-million pound UTC@harbourside, a pioneering University Technical College in Newhaven, East Sussex.
The home of UTC@harbourside will form the centrepiece of the regeneration of the Railway Quay at Newhaven, and will incorporate the historic Grade II Listed Marine Workshops and Carpenters Workshop. In addition to the new UTC@harbourside, the project also includes the provision of a new ‘boardwalk’ enabling pedestrians to return to this key harbour side location in the heart of Newhaven.
As Planning Consultants for the multi-disciplinary project team ECE Planning’s role has involved working closely with clients Kier Construction, as well as HKS Architects, Mott MacDonald, and The Aldridge Foundation as the end user.
ECE Project Director Chris Barker explains how ECE Planning’s professional guidance enabled the project to overcome significant constraints and difficulties:
“The site of the UTC@harbourside at Railway Quay has long been a key regeneration opportunity in the heart of Newhaven, however those previous proposals have not come to fruition due to the significant heritage issues associated with the plethora of Listed Buildings within the site.
The proposals for the UTC@harbourside therefore had to first identify the significance of those existing buildings and structures, and then provide the bespoke high quality teaching accommodation required by the client whilst retaining those elements of historic significance.
Liaising with the client, architects and the Council’s Heritage & Conservation Officer, as well as local residents, ECE Planning was able to guide the project through the complexities of both Planning and Listed Buildings applications to a successful conclusion.”
The UTC@harbourside is under construction, and ECE Planning continue to work with the clients to deliver this complex and exciting project in Newhaven.
