Spearfield Stud
Overview
ECE Planning secured planning permission for a three bedroom, contemporary barn-like dwelling within the South Downs National Park, on a rural livery yard.
Spearfield Stud consists of a number of existing stables and barns, a large school and circular horse walker. It was successfully demonstrated within the application process that the proposed dwelling was needed for the agricultural and equestrian activity on site and vital when considering the welfare and safety of the animals.
In order to accommodate the new dwelling, the proposals sought permission for the removal of two dilapidated outbuildings which negatively contributed to the character of the South Downs National Park.
The residential dwelling was therefore designed to reflect a contemporary agricultural barn-like structure to maintain and improve the precedent character of the site. The dwelling was also designed to be sunken in to the landscape to maintain the openness of the wider countryside.
Equalling 190sqm of floorspace in total, the new dwelling will materially consist of horizontal black wooden cladding in conjunction with a black corrugated metal roof.
